A scene from the novel

Gates of Golden Dorm

Nothing happens—until The Piper, an inexplicable cat and a question about dreams arrive at the fence.

Nothing happened. Larry and Lorry began to wonder what they had walked into by following a hippie called The Dude—and how much they really knew about Yoshimi.

A man suddenly jumped over the fence and landed face down. He had a lit pipe, a red shirt, a torn black-and-red cloak and no feeling in his eyes. A cat slipped under the fence and lay beside him. ‘That cat’s something I can’t explain,’ he said.

They named him The Piper. Before clumsily crossing the fence again, he left them with two questions: what exactly is a dream, and what exactly is a joke? Larry and Lorry stayed. As they watched, the gates slowly opened inward.
